Registration procedure for short-term gainful employment

You may need to apply for a residence permit for stays of a maximum of 3 months or 90 days per calendar year. However, the conditions of the online registration procedure of the Federal Office for Migration must also be observed.

Nationals of EU/EFTA member states

These persons do not require a permit insofar as their stay lasts a maximum of 3 months or 90 days.

Employees of companies based in an EU-27/EFTA member state

These persons do not require a permit for stays of a maximum of 3 months or 90 days per calendar year.

Nationals of EU-2 member states

These persons will need a residence permit for stays of up to 3 months or 90 working days per calendar year in the following cases:

  • Permit for the four special sectors: In principal (construction and underground engineering) and ancillary building trade, gardening, cleaning in industry and within businesses and monitoring and security services, service providers (assigned employees or self-employed persons) need an EU/EFTA-type permit for short-term residents from the first day of employment.

  • Should a national of an EU-2 state take on a job with an employer in Switzerland, a permit is required from the first day of employment, even if the activity lasts less than three months.

No transitory periods apply to provision of services in the general industries. The provisions of the online registration procedure apply.

Nationals of third states

Nationals of third states must register in Switzerland by means of the online registration procedure of the Federal Office of Migration if they have been assigned by a company based in an EU-25/EFTA state to provide a service (implementation of orders or service contracts) in Switzerland. These persons must also be permanently authorised to work on the regular employment market of the EU-25/EFTA state before being assigned to Switzerland. Should a company based in an EU-2 state assign third-state nationals, they will require a permit in the following four sectors: Principal and ancillary building trade, gardening, industrial cleaning, monitoring and security services.

Services that take more than 90 days are subject to a permit as normal.
