Self-employed persons

Want to start a company in Switzerland? Switzerland offers an attractive market environment for (new) companies.

Self-employed persons work on their own account and at their own risk, as well without instruction. Proof can generally be provided by means of the following documents:

  • Confirmation of membership of an insurance fund for old age and survivors’ insurance/invalidity insurance as per the contribution obligation for the self-employed
  • Excerpt from the commercial register for commercial activity
  • Contracts with clients and issued invoices

Loss of your right of residence

Self-employed persons that cannot (or can no longer) cover their personal expenses and apply for social benefits lose their right of residence.

EU/EFTA nationals

Self-employed persons from EU/EFTA states receive a permit for resident foreign nationals upon provision of proof of gainful self-employment. The municipality generally issues the residence permit for a limit of five years.

Some professional groups, such as doctors, chiropractors, psychotherapists, care professionals, some teaching professionals, engineers, architects, lawyers and notaries also require qualifications and diplomas corresponding to Swiss law in order to practise their activity. Cf. www.bbt.admin.ch

Third-state nationals

Nationals of third states that are self-employed and take up residence in Switzerland are subject to a permit obligation from the first day. They are subject to the canton-based and national permit procedure.

There are certain exceptions to the permit obligation, e.g. in the case of persons whose spouse is a Swiss national or has a C-type permit for settled foreign nationals.

Some professional groups, such as doctors, chiropractors, psychotherapists, care professionals, some teaching professionals, engineers, architects, lawyers and notaries also require qualifications and diplomas corresponding to Swiss law in order to practise their activity. Cf. www.bbt.admin.ch
