Service providers

Service providers or assigned employees are foreign workers that work in Switzerland for an employer that is based abroad. In doing so, the workers perform their normal work for a certain period of time.

EU/EFTA nationals

Nationals of the EU-25/EFTA states that provide a cross-border service as an assigned employee or independent service provider (implementation of orders or service contracts) can carry out their activity for up to 90 days per calendar year without a permit. However, they are subject to the conditions of the online registration procedure of the Federal Office for Migration.

Nationals of Bulgaria and Romania are currently subject to a transitory regulation. A permit obligation exists for such employees if they are working as independent service providers or assigned employees in one of four special fields: Principal and ancillary building trade, gardening, industrial cleaning, monitoring and security services.

In the general service provision fields, however, there is only an obligation to complete the online registration procedure of the Federal Office for Migration.

An appropriate permit is required for services exceeding 90 days (no application of the online registration procedure).

Third-state nationals

Nationals of third states must register in Switzerland by means of the online registration procedure if they have been assigned by a company based in an EU-25/EFTA state to provide a service (implementation of orders or service contracts) in Switzerland for no longer than 90 days per calendar year. In addition, third-state nationals must have already been permanently authorised to work on the normal job market of a member state of EU-25 or EFTA before being sent to Switzerland.

Nationals of third states assigned by a company based in the EU-2 (Bulgaria, Romania) and that work in the four special sectors: principal and ancillary building trade, gardening, industrial cleaning and monitoring and security services, need a permit.

An appropriate permit is required for services exceeding 90 days (no application of the online registration procedure).
